Hi RAAM Fans ...
"When you're on the starting line of your First Century, it's not wise to sit
there and think 'I have to ride a Hundred Miles'. On my first one, my thought
was to get to the first rest stop. I made each succeeding rest stop my goal.
When they're about 25 miles apart, you don't get intimidated by what seems to
be an impossible distance. All you need to do is to ride 25 miles four times."
Sean Hogan, Ultramarathon Champion
Bicycling Calendar, September 1998
Speaking of Rest Stops, on the 1990 PAC Tour Southern Transcontinental, we found
what had to be the world's largest Dairy Queen -- it must have held 300
people!!!! Unlike these RAAM Riders who do 300+ Miles per day, we were doing
about 140 per day which was more than enough for me. We spent 7 out of our 21
days in Texas -- it's a mighty big state and they have mighty big DQ's. John
McKinley coined the now famous phrase of "Hoovering" Hot Fudge Banana Splits on
that PAC Tour. As in Hoover Vacuum Cleaners. We could "Hoover" one of those
babies in no time at all. Afterall, they do contain all of the Food Groups (ya,
right). And we were still loosing weight big time. We would work pacelines
always calculating the number of miles to the next DQ. It was a great
motivator. First question in the morning was, "Is this going to be a two DQ
Day?" Two DQ Days were the best. Zero DQ Days were real bummers. The Chief
Wizard, Lon Haldeman, did a great job finding plenty of DQ's on that 1990 route.
:) :)
Anyway, back to the 1999 race ... what an amazing Race it is this year!!
The credit for this work should go to:
1. Nick Gerlich who has worked so hard at designing and building the RAAM
Online Web Pages from which this information comes. Even now, Nick is on the
road and uploading photos from the RAAM Action every night as he goes across
America.
2. RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz.
The Web Site which is the result of all of Nick and Larry's work is very
impressive and if you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to
really see what each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:

HOT ITEM -- Team Colorado leads Team Coast Guard by 7 Hours at TS39 in
Mayflower, Arkansas, 1973 Miles into the race. The Women's Team Festina/DMS is
about 4 Hours back.
The Solo Men have about 350 Miles to go at say 14 MPH = 25 Hours to finish.
Team Colorado has about 800 Miles to go at say 20 MPH = 40 Hours to finish. It
looks like the many of the Solo Men will beat the Teams to the Finish Line!!
The Time Penalties and Notes section was updated below. Team Met-RX had to
abandon the race due to heat exhaustion yesterday.
These results may not line up on your CRT because of the Proportional Font
