Hi RAAM Fans ...
"It's getting wierd out there ... My mind is finally realizing that I'm not
kidding around." ....
Jonathon Boyer on Day 5 of the 1985 RAAM
"I did it my way. I'm really happy I could do it. I was confident that I
could do it and that's what I proved. I love this race. I really like it ... I
had no idea what experience it would be. I loved the experience and I will
never forget it."
Jonathon Boyer at the Finish of the 1985 RAAM
In 1985, RAAM was changed forever by the entry of Jonathon Boyer, one of two
of the most accomplished Road Racing Cyclists in America at that time.
Jonathon was the first American to race in the Tour de France!! In 1985,
there was an epic battle that occurred between Boyer and Michael Secrest.
Secrest lead all the way out to Day 5 by 38 Miles ahead of Boyer -- it was
very, very close. Only at the Blue Ridge Parkway where foggy and wet
conditions prevailed, did Boyer open a large lead over Secrest who found
it just too dangerous. History now records that Boyer made to the finish
in Atlantic City, New Jersey in 9 Days and 2 Hours, which was the fastest
Coast-To-Coast Bicycle Crossing up to that point. Secrest was very close
behind -- only 4 hours back after completing the last 420 miles in 24 hours
and he also passed the previous transcontinental record!!
The ABC Wide World of Sports won an Emmy Award for their coverage of the 1985
Race Across America -- and after watching this video again, I can see why: it's
really outstanding!! To order your copy, go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to the 1999 Race Across America Photos and Hot Item Updates.
There you will find a RAAM Book and Video Order Form ... just print it out,
fill it out, and mail it in.
The credit for this work should go to:
1. Nick Gerlich who has worked so hard at designing and building the RAAM
Online Web Pages from which this information comes. Even now, Nick is on the
road and uploading photos from the RAAM Action every night as he goes across
America.
2. RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz.
The Web Site which is the result of all of Nick and Larry's work is very
impressive and if you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to
really see what each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:

HOT ITEM -- Danny Chew has take the lead ahead of Wolfgang Fasching by 1 Hour at
TS38 in Dardanella, Arkansas, 1916 Miles into the race!! Last night, Danny was
in 3rd place and is now in 1st place.
HOT ITEM -- As previously reported, Gerry Tatrai has been on the move ...
climbing from 6th place to currently 3rd place.
At TS37 (Subiaco, Arkansas), it was:
1st: Chew at 7:47 P.M.
2nd: Tatrai at 8:30 P.M. = 43 Minutes Behind Chew
3rd: Fasching at 8:35 P.M. = 5 Minutes Behind Tatrai
so it is an extremely close race as the leaders are about 200 miles from the
Mississippi River.
At TS36 (Lavaca, Arkansas), it was:
1st: Chew at 4:40 P.M.
2nd: Fasching at 5:11 P.M. = 31 Minutes Behind Chew
3rd: Tatrai at 5:40 P.M. = 29 Minutes Behind Fasching
4th: Sakurai at 8:34 P.M. = About 3 Hours Behind Tatrai
5th: Clavedetscher at 9:21 P.M= 47 Minutes Behind Sakurai
6th: Kish not there yet
Clavedetscher appears to have ridden the first 792 miles to Cortez, Colorado
without any sleep. For much of that time, he was in First Place. We can't
count him out and can never count out Kish ... so it's a great race this year!!
HOT ITEM -- Team Colorado leads Team Coast Guard by 4 Hours at TS21 in La Veta,
Colorado, 1051 Miles into the race. The Women's Team Festina/DMS is about 2
Hours back.
The Time Penalties and Notes section was updated below but no new Time Penalties
or Notes were found on the Web Site.
These results may not line up on your CRT because of the Proportional Font
being used -- Copy them from here and Paste them into your Word Processor with
a Courier font and they will appear in columns.
