Hi RAAM Fans ...

"...Still it is an event which struggles to gain a larger identity. Ignored
by star road racers, it remains the province of a small family of ultra
marathon cyclists.

That is the heart of its limitation.

Ironically and undeniably,
it is also the heart of its appeal."

Jim Lampley, closing monologue from ABC Wide World of Sports
Coverage of the 1986 Race Across America

Hot Item -- This is the last Race Across America report that I'll be sending
out. I hope you've enjoyed the Race. I had a clue of what this might turn
into time wise after having done it last year, but this year was even more
intense!!
I have learned a lot about how to analyze the Race this year and hope I
haven't bored you to death with all of the E-Mails. If my analysis has helped bring
this years Race to life to any fellow cyclists, I'm happy.

Congratulations to all of the Riders in the 1998 Race Across America -- it
still amazes me how you can ride across America as fast as you did!!

Anyway, back to the 1998 Race ...

Hot Item -- Seana Hogan finished in 16th place after being passed by Tim
Kinkeade since the last report. In the above standings, I placed Seana in a
separate Women's Division because I think that's the official category she's
in. I had previously incorrectly reported that "Ensure will be awarding
$10,000 to the 1st place Woman so if Seana makes it to Savannah, she will
win that award." As of this writing, my understanding is that Seana will
receive the $10,000 only if she finished within [some number of hours] from
her Transcontinental Record of 9 Days, 4 Hours, and 17 Minutes. I have not
heard whether [some number of hours] is 48 or 60 or 72 -- we'll have to wait
for the Official Ruling from Race Director Michael Shermer on that one.
Seana's 1998 time was 11 Days, 7 Hours, 1 Minutes so she was 50 Hours and
44 Minutes behind her Transcon Record.

Peter Moffett who was on Rob Kish's crew reported that it was a bummer that
Seana missed a gold medal finish by three hours. Therefore, I conclude that
the Medal is based on Seana's Transcon Record.

Hot Item -- Giovanii Zilioli continued and finished in 14th place.

Hot Item -- Charlie Liskey and Aldo Calandro were the only riders still on
the road as of Monday 8/3/98 at 9:03 P.M.

Hot Item -- Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho moved up from 16th and finished
in 15th place by passing Seana Hogan.

Hot Item -- Charlie Liskey from Somis, California continues in 17th place.

Hot Item -- Aldo Calandro from Milano, Italy continues in 18th place.

Hot Item -- I was side tracked in my project to upload my RAAM Start Line
Photos. Instead, I spent the time to put all of these updates online so you
can easily go back and see anything you missed. Go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to 1998 Race Across America Hot Item Updates.
Also, you can order the RAAM Videos from there!!

Don't forget Nick's masterpiece photos at:
http://www.RAAMOnline.com

The 1993 Race Across America video was shown on the Prime Network and it has
all of the great Gerry Tatrai moments as well as the greatest duel and the
closest finish in the history of the race: Seana Hogan v. Muffy Ritz. It also
shows a dramatic team event as 8 teams battle each other in lightning pace
across America, testing new strategies and tactics.
To order your video, go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to the 1998 Race Across America Hot Items Updates.

These results may not line up on your CRT because of the Proportional Font
being used -- Copy them from here and Paste them into your Word Processor with
a Courier font and they will appear in columns.

Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print
well.
In the prior few E-Mails, there are instructions on how to print it with nice
columns. Let me know if you need these instructions again.

All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR
Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if
you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what
each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
