Hi RAAM Fans ...

'Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colours from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion?
Pinprick holes in a colourless sky,
Let inspired figures of light pass by,
The mighty light of ten thousand suns,
Challenges infinity and is soon gone.
Night time, to some a brief interlude,
To others the fear of solitude.
Brave Helios wake up your steeds,
Bring the warmth the countryside needs.
          The Moody Blues
          Days of Future Passed

This year, Lon Haldeman is currently on the RAAM Route having started a group of
PAC Tour RAAM Riders who are riding 190 Miles a day for 15 days. Riders
completing the entire tour will qualify for RAAM next year. They started on
July 18th so they had a 5 day head start on the Solo RAAM Riders. As of now,
Lon and his group should be in Savannah celebrating with the RAAM Riders!!

Anyway, back to the 1998 Race ...

Extremely Hot Item -- Team Action Sports, Team Pacificcare, and Team Austria
have finished the Race!! Team Action Sports are now enjoying the fruits of all
of their hard work:
--Ensure will be awarding $10,000 to the 1st Place Team.
--An Ultrium (Special Stainless Steel) Race Across America Ring.
--A Gold RAAM Medallion
--A Gold Esquire Sports Watch
--United States Plaque handmade by Lon Haldeman
--Free entry to the Furnace Creek 508 by Chris Kostman
--Free entry to Ironbutt

Hot Item -- Team Action Sports beat Team Pacificcare to Time Station 54 by 55
minutes. However, the Team Pacificare really turned on the afterburners from TS
54 to the finish at TS 56, dropping the gap all the way down to 22 minutes --
taking 33 minutes out of the leaders!! Both teams finished with an incredible
22.1 MPH!! Ensure will award $5,000 to Team Pacificcare. In addition, they
will receive Ultrium RAAM Rings, Gold RAAM Medallions, and Gold Esquire Sports
Watches.

Hot Item -- Team Austria finished behind Team Pacificare by about 12 hours in
3rd place. On the last report, they had a 5 hour lead over Team Colorado who is
in 4th place but this has widened all the way out to 17 hours on this report!!??
Ensure will award $3,000 to the 3rd Place Team, Team Austria. In addition, they
will receive Ultrium RAAM Rings, Gold RAAM Medallions, and Gold Esquire Sports
Watches.

Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching has more than recovered
from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 10th to 9th to 6th to 3rd to
2nd to 3rd and back to 2nd place. Nick reports: "Perhaps the most inspiring
story of RAAM occurred to Wolfgang Fasching, the defending champion from
Austria. With 50 miles to go, Fasching clipped a road reflector and hit the
pavement, breaking his clavicle. Undaunted, the stoic Austrian re-mounted his
bike (very carefully) and rode one-handed the remaining 50 miles to Savannah.
His courage preserved for him a second-place finish. In great pain, and with
large areas of skin torn from the fall, Fasching rode confidently through the
cobbles of River Street right to the Finish Line, waving his country's flag
proudly."

But that's not all to the story: Wolfgang experienced some MAJOR problems in the
Arizona desert. Wolfgang was the first solo rider to pass through TS 2. But in
just 10 miles past Indio, Wolfgang was experiencing some major heat related
problems. Looking back over the reports, on the morning of Day 2 of RAAM,
Wolfgang was all the way back in 21st Place!! This put him 6 Hours behind Gerry
Tatrai at Time Station 3.

Talk about a come from behind story. On the next report he was all the way up
to 10th place then 9th then 6th then 3rd then 2nd then 3rd then 2nd. In this
Race, Wolfgang then got himself back together and passed every single rider on
the road with the exception of Gerry Tatrai!! Ensure awarded Wolfgang $5,000
for his 2nd Place Finish. In addition, he will receive an Ultrium RAAM Ring, a
Gold RAAM Medallion, and an Esquire Gold Sports Watch.

Hot Item -- Rob Kish finished behind Wolfgang by 2 and 1/2 hours. Ensure
awarded Rob $2,000 for his 3rd Place Finish. In addition, he will receive an
Ultrium RAAM Ring, a Gold RAAM Medallion, and an Esquire Gold Sports Watch.

Hot Item -- Danny Chew finished in 4th place. The gap between Rob and Danny
extended from 47 minutes on the last report to about 2 hours by the Finish. He
will receive a Ultrium RAAM Ring, a Gold RAAM Medallion, and an Esquire Gold
Sports Watch.

Hot Item -- Tom Buckley continues in 7th place.

Hot Item -- Fabio Biasiolo was passed by Andreas and dropped from 5th to 6th
place.

Hot Item -- Andreas Clavedetscher passed Fabio and climbed from 6th to 5th
place.

Hot Item -- Steve Born continues in 8th place.

Hot Item -- Seana Hogan continues in 15th place. Ensure will be awarding
$10,000 to the 1st place Woman so if Seana makes it to Savannah, she will win
that award.

Hot Item -- Unfortunately, Hansgeorg Haus from Permasens, Germany, has dropped
from the Race. At 8/1/98 3:00 AM, it was reported that he DNF'd @ RP932. The
reason: Need to catch plane. Hansgeorg rode 2,295 Miles in 9 days which is a
remarkable achievement in itself!!

Hot Item -- I was side tracked in my project to upload my RAAM Start Line
Photos. Instead, I spent the time to put all of these updates online so you can
easily go back and see anything you missed. Go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to 1998 Race Across America Hot Item Updates.
Also, you can order the RAAM Videos from there!!

Don't forget Nick's masterpiece photos at:
http://www.RAAMOnline.com

Hot Item -- Let's talk about the Rookies.

Mark Patten is from Saratoga, California continues in 11th place.

Harold Trease from Jemez Springs, New Mexico continues in 10th place.

Andreas Clavedetscher from Liechenstein has moved up to 5th place.

Andrew Bohannon from Sunnyvale, California continues in 9th place.

Rick Anderson from Woodside, California continues in 13th place.

Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho has moved up from 17th to 16th place, due to the
DNF of Hansgeorg.

Charlie Liskey from Somis, California has moved up from 18th to 17th place, due
to the DNF of Hansgeorg.

Hot Item -- 1989 Winner Paul Solon continues in 12th place.

Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team 70+ continue on their same pace, following
Team Secure Horizons by 15 Hours.

All Rider Web pages were searched for Notes and Time Penalties and the following
was found:
Hot Item -- Team Action Sports received a 10 minutes Time Penalty for failing to
call their Time Station times in a timely manner.

Hot Item -- Overall Position numbers on these reports are based on the following
Race Categories:
Solo RAAM, Men and Women, Numbers 1 ... 20
2 Man Relay Team & 70 Plus Teams that started with Solo RAAM, Numbers 1 ... 3
Team RAAM and Human Powered Vehicle, Numbers 1 ... 11

The 1993 Race Across America video was shown on the Prime Network and it has all
of the great Gerry Tatrai moments as well as the greatest duel and the closest
finish in the history of the race: Seana Hogan v. Muffy Ritz. It also shows a
dramatic team event as 8 teams battle each other in lightning pace across
America, testing new strategies and tactics.
To order your video, go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to the 1998 Race Across America Hot Items Updates.

These results may not line up on your CRT because of the Proportional Font
being used -- Copy them from here and Paste them into your Word Processor with
a Courier font and they will appear in columns.

Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print well.
In the prior few E-Mails, there are instructions on how to print it with nice
columns. Let me know if you need these instructions again.

All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR Club
and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if you
don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what each
rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
