Hi RAAM Fans ...
"And Gerry Tatrai is this Wonder from Down Under, Australia.
He lives for this race -- it's his whole life!!
He loves this race ... and really thinks he can win!!"
Michael Shermer
1993 RAAM Tape Introduction
"Got any toothpaste for me?"
Gerry Tatrai
Asking a guy on the Las Vegas Strip in the middle of the night
as Gerry rode through in 1st Place while brushing his teeth
1993 RAAM
"It's just so wild ... no one else is around!!
I guess we'll have fun -- I've got a good crew."
Gerry Tatrai
1993 RAAM after Paul Solon dropped out in Slapout, Oklahoma
Rob Kish was a full day back!!
His crew chief: Lee Mitchell, generally known as The Best!!
"An auto accident just 9 months before left him for Dead. He is riding this
RAAM with a 10 inch long pin in his Right Femor -- the entire length of the
bone!!"
Michael Shermer regarding Gerry on the 1993 RAAM Video
"All you've got to do is ride the bike, right?"
"Sounds simple, heh?
I'm just out for a ride.
Where are we going? The East Coast!!"
Gerry Tatrai
1993 RAAM
In 1993, Gerry won the Race Across America in 8 Days, 20 Hours ahead of Rob
Kish in 2nd place by almost a full day!! Talk about a come from behind
victory: Gerry was injured in a horrible Auto Accident just 9 months before
his victory!!
I first met Gerry Tatrai on PAC Tour 1990. We rode from Twenty Nine Palms
to Needles on Day 2 of our Transcontinental -- about 120 Miles. Gerry gave
the Peloton about a hour head start -- then blew right by all of us --
smoking the 120 Miles non-stop -- and all on TWO WATER BOTTLES!!!
(This was before Camelbaks were invented.) The boys in the Peloton are
still talking about that one!! :) :)
All of us got to know Gerry that year. We all thought we liked riding our
bikes. But with Gerry it was different: Gerry found a pure joy in cycling.
And by the huge grin on his face on the 1998 RAAM Day 8 Photo Page, Gerry
continues to find a pure joy in cycling, that's for sure.
On those days Gerry had to crew on the PAC Tour, he'd be down in the dumps.
On those days where he could ride, he'd full throttle time trial the routes
and be there waiting for us at the next night's Hotel with a big grin on his
face. I think each of us on PAC Tour 1990 knew that Gerry had a very special
talent -- and since then Gerry has shown us that talent over and over again.
With a Rookie 3rd Place in 1991 RAAM, another 3rd Place in 1992 RAAM, a 1st
Place in 1993 RAAM, a 3rd Place in 1995 RAAM, a 4th Place in 1996 RAAM, and
now what appears to be a 1st Place Win in 1998, Gerry has shown us that he
does indeed have a very special talent!!
Nick said it best today from his Photo Web Page: "Tatrai has proven himself
to be a worthy leader of RAAM, holding on to a lead he established back on
the first night of RAAM in the deserts of southern California. Across barren
southwest Arizona, mountainous eastern Arizona, the mountains and high plains
of New Mexico, the prairies and then piney woods of Texas, the delta region
of Arkansas, and the kudzu-covered hills of Tennessee, Tatrai has maintained
an impressive lead over what is undoubtedly one of the most talented RAAM
rosters ever.
When the race left Irvine last Thursday, there, assembled before the podium,
were six former RAAM winners, the most ever to appear in the same race. As
Day 8 came to a close, the top four positions were occupied by past winners,
showing the extreme level of competition in this year's race."
Gerry is truly The Wonder from Down Under when he's firing on all cylinders
-- and he definitely was doing just that on this year's Race Across America.
Yet, in addition, Gerry Tatrai is just a really nice guy.
In 1994, Gerry lived with us from March until July. He became a big brother
figure to my two boys -- and a darn good one at that. He was always fun to
have around, never a problem, and just the best kind of guest. My only
regret was that I was working huge hours during that time so we didn't get
a chance to ride nearly as much as I wanted to with him. He was still
recovering from getting the pin taken out of his femur. Of course, I could
never hold with him very long and his back to back 150-200 Mile Training
Rides were a bit much for me!! :) :)
Here's an example from Mike Rachelson that he reported today from Gainseville,
Georgia:
"Gerry Tatrai reportedly passed through around 7:30 am today (Friday
7-31-98). Unfortunately, I missed seeing him by 30 minutes. Gerry is
probably one the nicest and most humble riders I've met (I rode with him on
PAC Tour in '91) In '93 when he stopped at the Lawrenceville, GA time
station, he immediately went to his sag vehicle to clean up and fuel. After
a few minutes he walked over to the few spectators and apologized for
ignoring them when he rode up. This, during the race, while he was trying
to maintain first place!"
Gerry: A REALLY BIG CONGRATULATIONS on what must be a First Place Win
in the 1998 Race Across America!!
I have just viewed the 1993 Race Across America video which was shown on the
Prime Network. It has all of the above Gerry Tatrai great moments as well as
the greatest duel and the closest finish in the history of the race: Seana
Hogan v. Muffy Ritz. It also shows a dramatic team event as 8 teams battle each
other in lightning pace across America, testing new strategies and tactics.

then to the 1998 Race Across America Hot Items Updates.
This year, Lon Haldeman is currently on the RAAM Route having started a group of
PAC Tour RAAM Riders who are riding 190 Miles a day for 15 days. Riders
completing the entire tour will qualify for RAAM next year. They started on
July 18th so they had a 5 day head start on the Solo RAAM Riders. As of now,
Lon and his group should be 14 Days x 190 = 2660 Miles into the course and the
first five Solo riders have probably seen them.
Anyway, back to the 1998 Race ...
Hot Item -- Gerry Tatrai, The Wonder From Down Under (Australia), continues to
lead the Solo RAAM. Wolfgang Fasching continues in 2nd Place. Now Gerry has a 4 Hour lead on Wolfgang in 2nd place at Time Station 52 (Louisville, GA) which
is 2,794 miles into the race. Gerry is actually through TS 54 (Guyton, GA)
which is 2,877 miles into the race so Gerry has about a 60 mile lead on
Wolfgang!!
Hot Item -- Since the last update, Gerry has ridden another 241 Miles and his
Total Average Speed has increased from 14.1 back up to 14.2. After 2,800 Miles
of Racing, this is really incredible.
Hot Item -- So when will Gerry get to Savannah? This year's Route is 2,907
miles and Gerry has covered 2,876 so he has 31 miles to go. At his current
Total Average Speed of 14.1, he should get there 2 Hours from 7/31/98 10:30 P.M.
Therefore, Gerry should make it to the Finish on Saturday 8/1/98 at about 12:30
A.M. EST which would be a 8 Day, 12 Hour Transcontinental Crossing. In fact, by
the time you read this, Gerry will probably be enjoying the fruits of all of his
hard work:
--Ensure will be awarding $10,000 to the 1st Place Solo Man.
--An Ultrium (Special Stainless Steel) Race Across America Ring.
--A Gold RAAM Medallion
--A Gold Esquire Sports Watch
--A United States Plaque Handmade by Lon Haldeman
--A Litespeed Titanium Frame
--$50 of RAAM Concessions from Ultra Sports Marketing (Nick & Becky Gerlich)
--A Free Entry into Ironbutt
--Unfortunately, Gerry will probably not receive a full set of RAAM Videos from
Michael Shermer because he probably does not have the Worst Neck of an
Official Finisher. Of course, Gerry doesn't really need a full set of RAAM
Videos because he has seen most of them from the inside out!!
Extremely Hot Item -- Team Secure Horizons / SCOR is a four man Team of over 70 year old cyclists from Southern California and have completed their
Transcontinental Race. They finished on 7/31/98 at 9:26 PM with a Finish time
of: 8 Days, 9 Hours, 13 Minutes. The previous record was held by Team 70 Plus
who in 1996 crossed America in 9 Days and 2 Hours -- so Team Secure Horizons /
SCOR should feel very proud of knocking nearly a full day off the previous
record!!
Team Secure Horizons / SCOR are now enjoying the fruits of all of their hard
work:
--Ensure will be awarding $3,000 to the 1st Place 70+ Team.
--An Ultrium (Special Stainless Steel) Race Across America Ring.
--A Gold RAAM Medallion
--A Gold Esquire Sports Watch
Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team Secure Horizons increased their lead over
Team 70+ from 13 to 15 Hours.
Interesting Item -- Team Secure Horizons / SCOR beat Gerry Tatrai and all of the
other Solo Young Whipper Snappers to Savannah!! This is a major news story: how can a Team of 70 Year Olds get to Savannah first? I rode the first 30 miles of
the Team's record ride across California in May and I can tell you: these guys
are as smooth and steady on the bike as anyone half their age!! They would just
dial it in at 18-19 MPH and hold it there. They are a major inspiration to all
of us young whipper snappers!!
Hot Item -- Overall Position numbers on these reports are based on the
following Race Categories:
Solo RAAM, Men and Women, Numbers 1 ... 20
2 Man Relay Team & 70 Plus Teams that started with Solo RAAM, Numbers 1 ... 3
Team RAAM and Human Powered Vehicle, Numbers 1 ... 11
Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching has more than
recovered from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 10th to 9th
to 6th to 3rd to 2nd to 3rd and back to 2nd place. Rob Kish now follows
Wolfgang by only about 2 and 1/2 hours. Ensure will be awarding $5,000
to the 2nd Place and $2,000 to the 3rd Place Solo Man.
Hot Item -- Danny Chew continues in 4th place but is only 47 minutes behind
Rob!!
Hot Item -- Tom Buckley continues in 7th place.
Hot Item -- Fabio Biasiolo continues in 5th place.
Hot Item -- Andreas Clavedetscher continues in 6th place.
Hot Item -- Steve Born continues in 8th place.
Hot Item -- Seana Hogan has dropped back from 14th to 15th place, having been
passed once again by Giovanni Zilioli. Seana and Giovanni have been going back
and forth on each other for quite some time now. Ensure will be awarding
$10,000 to the 1st place Woman so if Seana makes it to Savannah, she will win
that award.
Hot Item -- I was side tracked in my project to upload my RAAM Start Line
Photos. Instead, I spent the time to put all of these updates online so you
can easily go back and see anything you missed. Go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to 1998 Race Across America Hot Item Updates.
Also, you can order the RAAM Videos from there!!
Don't forget Nick's masterpiece photos at:
http://www.RAAMOnline.com
Hot Item -- Let's talk about the Rookies.
Mark Patten is from Saratoga, California has dropped back from 10th to 11th
place.
Harold Trease from Jemez Springs, New Mexico has dropped from 9th to 10th place.
Andreas Clavedetscher from Liechenstein continues in 6th place.
Andrew Bohannon from Sunnyvale, California has moved up from 11th to 9th place.
Rick Anderson from Woodside, California continues in 13th place.
Hansgeorg Haus from Permasens, Germany, continues in 16th.
Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho continues in 17th place.
Charlie Liskey from Somis, California continues in 18th place.
Unfortunately, on 7/31/98 at 1:06 PM , Bernie Comeau from Ottawa, Canada dropped due to extreme pain and exhaustion. Bernie road 1,819 Miles in 8 days which is a remarkable achievement in itself!!
Hot Item -- 1989 Winner Paul Solon continues in 12th place.
Hot Item -- Team Action Sports beat Team Pacificare to Time Station 54 by 55
minutes. They continue at an incredible 22.2 MPH!! Ensure will award $10,000
to the First Place Team and $5,000 to the Second Place Team.
Hot Item -- Team Austria follows Team Pacificare by about 9 hours and is in 3rd
place. They have a 5 hour lead over Team Colorado who is in 4th place. Ensure
will award $3,000 to the 3rd Place Team.
Hot Item -- The 4 Man Teams that started Sunday, 3 days after the Solo Riders
are now passing the Solo Riders. Team Action Sports and Team Pacificare have
passed Gerry Tatrai on the road and will make it to the finish line before
Gerry. However, Gerry will make it to the Finish Line before any of the other
teams so lots of action in Savannah tonight!!
All Rider Web pages were searched for Notes and Time Penalties and the following
was found:
Hot Item -- Team Action Sports received a 10 minutes Time Penalty for failing to
call their Time Station times in a timely manner.
Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print well.
In the prior few E-Mails, there are instructions on how to print it with nice
columns. Let me know if you need these instructions again.
All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what each
rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
