Hi RAAM Fans ...

"I'm a Steady Rollin' Man ... I can roll all Night and Day."
               George Thorogood and the Destroyers

An appropriate theme song for Gerry Tatrai as he continues to just Roll Steady
right on down the road.

Warning ... Warning ... Warning: The Mississippi River is about 150 Miles away
for Gerry. Pete Penseyres said, "The Race doesn't begin until the
Mississippi." So the race is about to begin!!

This one is dedicated to Tom Buckley who had his 44th Birthday Party on the
Bike today as he rode in the neighborhood of Farmersville to Talco, Texas, over
1,700 miles into the race. Tom has ridden a really excellent race battling it out
and oftentimes in Third Place. Happy Birthday, Tom!!

Anyway, back to the Race ...

Notice to all Crews -- Michael Shermer is heading forward on the course. At
10:00 P.M. EST, he was at TS 20. He will be looking for each rider to have
the Ensure Logos on the Chest and on the Arms of the Jerseys. If Michael finds a
rider without the logos, he could very well send the rider home as per his
agreement with each rider.

Hot Item -- Gerry Tatrai, The Wonder From Down Under (Australia), continues to
lead the Solo RAAM. Rob Kish in 2nd Place has fallen back behind Gerry from 3
Hours to 5 Hours to now over 7 hours at Time Station 30 (Hope, AR) which is
1,820 miles into the race. Gerry is actually through TS 33 (Pine Bluff, AR)
which is 1,942 miles into the race so Gerry has a 122 mile lead on Rob!! Just
yesterday at TS 23, Rob was only 50 minutes behind Gerry so Rob must have
fallen into some trouble today. Or is Gerry robbing the sleep tank?

Hot Item -- In my previous E-Mail, I was comparing Gerry Tatrai's Stellar
performance here to Pete Penesyre's 1986 RAAM where he had a Total Average
Speed of 15.4 MPH. Since the last update, Gerry has ridden another 123 Miles
and has increased his Total Average Speed back up from 14.9 to 15.0. Don't
forget: no one except for Pete has broken the 15.0 barrier.

Hot Item -- Overall Position numbers on these reports are based on the
following
Race Categories:
Solo RAAM, Men and Women, Numbers 1 ... 20
2 Man Relay Team & 70 Plus Teams that started with Solo RAAM, Numbers 1 ... 3
Team RAAM and Human Powered Vehicle, Numbers 1 ... 11

Extremely Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching continues
to be recovering from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 10th to 9th
to 6th and is now in 3rd place trailing Rob Kish by only about 3 hours.

Extremely Hot Item -- Danny Chew continues his assault. The 1996 Winner has
moved up from 9th to 5th place and has now passed Andreas for 4th Place. Look
out for Danny -- he only trails Wolfgang by 30 minutes. This could be a very
tight race!!

Hot Item -- Tom Buckley has dropped from 3rd to 6th place.

Hot Item -- Andreas Clavedetscher has dropped from 4th to 5th place. He
follows Danny by about 2 hours.

Hot Item -- Steve Born has dropped from 10th to 11th.

Hot Item -- Seana Hogan has dropped from 14th place to 16th place, having been
passed by Giovanni Zilioli and Tim Kinkeade. Unfortunately, Seana had to
check into a hospital but is now back on the road and cranked out a 15 MPH split
from TS 23 to TS 24 which is 46 miles. So Seana may be rolling again -- let's hope
so!!

Hot Item -- I was side tracked in my project to upload my RAAM Start Line
Photos. Instead, I spent the time to put all of these updates online so you
can easily go back and see anything you missed. Go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to 1998 Race Across America Hot Item Updates.
I have added the following at www.CalTripleCrown.com:

1. On the Home Page, added a link to the 1998 Race Across America Hot Item
Updates. This new Web Page includes a photo of Gerry Tatrai taken by Mike
Gladu as he lead the Race Across America going into Celina, Texas on 7/27/98
at 9:30 P.M. Mike graciously allowed me to copy his most excellent work to
this page.

2. Hot Item Updates that are currently available include blow by blow reports
of the Race Across America taken at the following times along with analysis
reports:

  7/24/98 1:06 A.M
  7/24/98 9:44 A.M.
How Fast Do RAAM Riders Ride A Century on RAAM?

  7/25/98 10:03 A.M
How Fast Do RAAM Riders Ride A Double Century on RAAM?
Fireworks for Tatrai & Hogan at New Mexico & Team RAAM Ready
Can Gerry Tatrai Match Pete Penseyre's Average Speed Record?
  7/26/98 12:57 A.M.
Team Race Across America Start and 80 Miles Per Hour!
  7/27/98 12:36 A.M.
  7/27/98 4:32 P.M
  7/28/98 2:18 A.M
The Next Rest Stop, Dairy Queens, and RAAM 7/28/98 2:52 P.M.

If you lost or misplaced one of the above reports, you can go to
www.CalTripleCrown.com and check it out again.

Wondering how that Cyclist or Team got to where they are? Go to
www.CalTripleCrown.com and you can get the answer to that and many other
questions you probably weren't even asking. :) :)

And yes, columns line up on these reports so they are easy to read.

Don't forget Nick's masterpiece photos at:
http://www.RAAMOnline.com

Hot Item -- Let's talk about the Rookies.

Mark Patten is from Saratoga, California continues in 8th place.

Harold Trease from Jemez Springs, New Mexico continues in 9th place.

Andreas Clavedetscher from Liechenstein has dropped back from 4th to 5th
place.

Andrew Bohannon from Sunnyvale, California has moved up from 11th to 10th
place.

Rick Anderson from Woodside, California continues in 13th place.

Hansgeorg Haus from Permasens, Germany, has dropped from 16th to 17th place.

Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho has moved up from 17th to 15th place.

Charlie Liskey from Somis, California continues in 18th place.

Bernie Comeau from Ottawa, Canada continues in 19th place.

Hot Item -- 1989 Winner Paul Solon continues in 12th place.

Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team Secure Horizons continues their lead
over Team 70+ by 9 Hours.

Interesting Item -- Team Secure Horizons has now passed all of the Solo Riders
except for Tatrai who they trail by about 4 hours. Can those 70 year old guys
roll into Savannah before those Solo Young Whipper Snappers? (Go Guido and
buddies)

Hot Item -- Team Action Sports beat Team Pacificare to Time Station 20 by 18
minutes. They need a Total Average Speed of over 23.0 in order to beat the
Team Kern Wheelmen's 1995 Record and at this point, the Pacificare guys are running
at a Total Average Speed of 22.4 MPH, way up from the 22.0 MPH on the last
update.

Hot Item -- Bob Forney's Total Average Speed has dropped considerably from
16.4 to 15.1 as he is climbing up to Cloudcroft, New Mexico. He is still ahead of
Team Jimmy that have the luxury of swapping out dead riders with fresh ones.
Watch out for Bob going down from Cloudcraft from TS14 to TS16 -- he's going
to FLY!!

Hot Item -- Team Austria received a 10 minute penalty for urinating in public.

Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print
well. In the prior few E-Mails, there are instructions on how to print it with nice
columns. Let me know if you need these instructions again.

All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR
Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if
you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what
each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
