Hi RAAM Fans ...
"When you're on the starting line of your First Century, it's not wise to sit
there and think 'I have to ride a Hundred Miles'. On my first one, my thought
was to get to the first rest stop. I made each succeeding rest stop my goal.
When they're about 25 miles apart, you don't get intimidated by what seems to
be an impossible distance. All you need to do is to ride 25 miles four times."
Sean Hogan, Ultramarathon Champion
Bicycling Calendar, September 1998
This update is dedicated to Seana. After completing the last update early
this morning at 1:00 A.M., I flipped my calendar to September and voila, there was
Seana's quote -- and it jumped out at me like she was talking to all of us.
So even though she's running into some problems on RAAM 1998, I think we're all
rooting for her to make it to the next rest stop -- 25 miles at a time really
does work you know. For all of us and for her. Whether the distance is 100
Miles, 200 Miles, or 2,900 Miles, her advice works real good.
It's hotter than Blue Blazes in So. California and Texas today. Have any of
the crews found some outstanding Dairy Queens on the new 1998 Route? Let me know.
On the 1990 PAC Tour Southern Transcontinental, we found what had to be the
world's largest Dairy Queen -- it must have held 300 people!!!! Unlike these
RAAM Riders who do 300+ Miles per day, we were doing about 140 per day which
was more than enough for me. We spent 7 out of our 21 days in Texas -- it's a
mighty big state and they have mighty big DQ's. John McKinley coined the now
famous phrase of "Hoovering" Hot Fudge Banana Splits on that PAC Tour. As in
Hoover Vacuum Cleaners. We could "Hoover" one of those babies in no time at
all. Afterall, they do contain all of the Food Groups (ya, right). And we
were still loosing weight big time. We would work pacelines always calculating the
number of miles to the next DQ. It was a great motivator. First question in
the morning was, "Is this going to be a two DQ Day?" Two DQ Days were the
best. Zero DQ Days were real bummers. The Chief Wizard, Lon Haldeman, did a
great job finding plenty of DQ's on that 1990 route. :) :)
Anyway, back to the Race ...
Hot Item -- Gerry Tatrai, The Wonder From Down Under (Australia), continues to
lead the Solo RAAM. Rob Kish in 2nd Place has fallen back behind Gerry from 3
Hours to about 5 Hours at Time Station 28 (Talco, TX) which is 1,719 miles
into the race.
Hot Item -- In my previous E-Mail, I was comparing Gerry Tatrai's Stellar
performance here to Pete Penesyre's 1986 RAAM where he had a Total Average
Speed of 15.4 MPH. Since the last update, Gerry has ridden another 179 Miles
but his Total Average Speed has decreased from 15.0 to 14.9.
Hot Item -- Overall Position numbers on these reports are based on the
following Race Categories:
Solo RAAM, Men and Women, Numbers 1 ... 20
2 Man Relay Team & 70 Plus Teams that started with Solo RAAM, Numbers 1 ... 3
Team RAAM and Human Powered Vehicle, Numbers 1 ... 11
Hot Item -- Tom Buckley continues in 3rd place, trailing Rob Kish by about 2
hours.
Hot Item -- Andreas Clavedetscher has passed Danny Chew and is now in 4th
place. Danny, the 1996 Winner had moved up from 9th to 5th to 4th place and
is now back in 5th place. However, he only follows Andreas by 30 minutes.
Extremely Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching continues
to be recovering from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 10th to 9th
and is now in 6th place. He follows Danny by only 30 minutes.
Hot Item -- Steve Born has dropped 9th to 10th place, having been passed by
Harold Trease. It's real tight in that area.
Hot Item -- Seana Hogan has dropped from 13th place to 14th place, having been
passed by Rick Anderson. On the last report, Seana was ahead of Rick by 6
hours but is now behind Rick by about 3 hours. Unfortunately, Seana is
running into some major problems and we hope she's rolling again real soon.
Hot Item -- I have started uploading my RAAM Start Line Photos. Go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to 1998 Race Across America Start Line Photos. This is definitely a work
in progress and much more will follow there. No new photos since my last
update -- but maybe tomorrow? (I've got to get with the program -- but these updates
are taking a good chunk of time).
Don't forget Nick's masterpieces at:
http://www.RAAMOnline.com
Hot Item -- Let's talk about the Rookies.
Mark Patten is from Saratoga, California continues in 8th place.
Harold Trease from Jemez Springs, New Mexico has dropped from 11th to 9th.
Andreas Clavedetscher from Liechenstein has moved up from 5th to 4th place.
Andrew Bohannon from Sunnyvale, California has dropped from 10th to 11th
place.
Rick Anderson from Woodside, California has moved up from 14th to 13th place.
Hansgeorg Haus from Permasens, Germany, has dropped from 15th to 16th place.
Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho continues in 17th place.
Charlie Liskey from Somis, California continues in 18th place.
Bernie Comeau from Ottawa, Canada continues in 19th place.
Hot Item -- 1989 Winner Paul Solon continues in 12th place.
Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team Secure Horizons has increased their lead
over Team 70+ from 8 Hours to 9 Hours.
Interesting Item -- Team Secure Horizons has now passed all of the Solo Riders
except for Tatrai!! They have passed Rob Kish!! Come on Rob, you're not
going to let some 70 year old guys beat you to Savannah are you? Can those 70 year
old guys roll into Savannah before those Solo Young Whipper Snappers? (Go
Guido and buddies)
Hot Item -- In a major event, Team Action Sports beat Team Pacificare to Time
Station 16 by 11 minutes. I would imagine Big Joe Peterson and the Pacificare
boys are getting fed up with that?? They need a Total Average Speed of over
23.0 in order to beat the Team Kern Wheelmen's 1995 Record and at this point,
the Pacificare guys are running at a Total Average Speed of 22.0 MPH, down
from 22.2 MPH on the last update.
Hot Item -- Bob Forney's Total Average Speed has dropped considerably from
20.0 MPH to 17.2 MPH and now to 16.4 as he is climbing up to Cloudcroft, New
Mexico. He is still ahead of Team Jimmy that have the luxury of swapping out
dead riders with fresh ones. Watch out for Bob going down from Cloudcraft
from TS14 to TS16 -- he's going to FLY!!
The Web Site didn't have the Time Penalties updated -- so I'll catch them on
the next update.
Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print
well. In the prior few E-Mails, there are instructions on how to print it with nice
columns. Let me know if you need these instructions again.
All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR
Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if
you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what
each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
