Hi RAAM Fans ...
******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
On I8 in Arizona and on I10 in New Mexico, all riders must ride on the
shoulder even if it looks unrideable. Nick reports you may need to use your Mountain
Bike if necessary. If you do not ride on the shoulder, you will receive a
severe time penalty or be disqualified without warning. These states could
cancel RAAM if anyone is caught riding in the lane with traffic.
******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
In Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, the RAAM Headquarters Toll Free phone
number may not work. Here is a work around:
Dial 10-10-ATT-0
This will get you to an AT&T Operator who will dial the call at no charge to
you.

Hot Item -- Gerry Tatrai, The Wonder From Down Under (Australia), continues to
lead the Solo RAAM. However, the unfortunate surprise today is that Seana has
fallen from 2nd place down to 7th place. And Rob Kish has now moved up from
4th place to take over 2nd place trailing Gerry by 3.6 Hours.
Hot Item -- In my previous E-Mail, I was comparing Gerry Tatrai's Stellar
performance here to Pete Penesyre's 1986 RAAM where he had a Total Average
Speed of 15.7 MPH. Since the last update, Gerry has ridden another 345 Miles and
has dropped his Total Average Speed only by .1MPH, from 15.7 to 15.6!! Seana's
Total Average Speed has dropped from 15.0 MPH down to 14.2.
Hot Item -- Overall Position numbers are wrong on the Web Site again, mixing
the Teams that started Thursday in with the Solo Riders. I have corrected these
numbers on this report.
Hot Item -- Tom Buckley continues to 3rd place but was passed by Rob Kish
since the last report.
Extremely Hot Item -- From the last update, I reported, "Rob Kish is on the
move." Boy was that right on!! He had moved up from 9th Place to 4th Place
and was only 1 Hour behind Tom Buckley in 3rd Place. Now he has passed Tom and is
in 2nd Place!!
Extremely Hot Item -- Danny Chew is on the move. The 1996 Winner has moved up
from 9th to 5th place!! He was only 4 minutes behind Andreas going into TS18.
Look out for Danny!!
Hot Item -- Steve Born has opened a 3 hour gap on Paul Solon.
Hot Item -- I have started uploading my RAAM Start Line Photos. Go to:
http://www.CalTripleCrown.com
then to 1998 Race Across America Start Line Photos. This is definitely a work
in progress and much more will follow there. No new photos since my last
update
-- but maybe tomorrow?
Boy, I sure wish I had a cool Casio Camera and knew as much about HTML as Nick
does -- his Web Pages are Masterpieces at:
http://www.RAAMOnline.com
Hot Item -- Let's talk about the Rookies.
Mark Patten is from Saratoga, California and continues at 6th Place.
Harold Trease from Jemez Springs, New Mexico has moved from 13th to 10th
place.
Andreas Clavedetscher from Liechenstein has moved up from 5th place to 4th
place.
Andrew Bohannon from Sunnyvale, California has dropped from 11th to 12th
place.
Rick Anderson from Woodside, California has dropped from 12th to 14th place.
Hansgeorg Haus from Permasens, Germany, has dropped from 15th to 16th place.
Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho has dropped from 16th place to 17th place.
Charlie Liskey from Somis, California has dropped from 17th to 18th place.
Bernie Comeau from Ottawa, Canada has moved up from 20th to 19th place.
Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching continues to be
recovering from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 10th to 9th
Place.
Hot Item -- 1989 Winner Paul Solon has moved down from 8th to 13th place.
Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team Secure Horizons continues to lead Team
70+ by about 4 Hours. It is interesting to note that these Great Old Guys are now
starting to pass more and more of the Solo Riders -- even though they're old,
doesn't mean they're slow!! Of course, the Old Guys get a break in the action
as they have four guys on their teams.
Interesting Item -- Team Secure Horizons has now passed all of the Solo Riders
except for the top 3!! And Team 70+ is not far behind!! These Old Guys are
Rocking!!
Hot Item -- Team Pacificare leads the Team RAAM as expected. They lead Team
Action Sports by only 6 minutes at TS3, 198 Miles into the Race. They need a
Total Average Speed of over 23.0 in order to beat the Team Kern Wheelmen's
1995 Record and at this point, they are running at a Total Average Speed of 22.9
MPH.
Hot Item -- Bob Fourney is smoking for sure. He is in 3rd place in the Teams
behind two mighty fast teams. How fast is he rolling? His Total Average
Speed is 20.6 MPH and he just completed the first Double Century in 9 Hours and 37
Minutes!! Now I call that smoking!! He is ahead of 8 Teams that have the
luxury of swapping out dead riders for fresh ones. He covered the 114 Miles
between TS 1 and TS 3 in 4:37 so he cooked that Century in 4:02!! Amazing!!
Hot Item -- Tom Buckley was detained 11 minutes by police after RP 309.
Hot Item -- The previously reported Time Penalties for Aldo Calandro
caravaning were cleared up (they should have been applied to Team Gustavo RMO) and no
Time Penalty was issued to Aldo.
Hot Item -- Team Gustavo Rmo has received a 15 Minute penalty for caravanning
vehicles behind rider on narrow road. They also received a 5 minute crew
penalty for following rider in Arizona during day time.
Hot Item -- Bob Fourney received a 15 minute Time Penalty for not stopping at
a Stop Sign at TS 2. Maybe Bob couldn't get that dragster of his to stop in
time?
Hot Item -- Team Jimmy received a 15 minute Time Penalty for running a Stop
Sign at the Start.
Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print
well. I have corrected the column headings. These results may not line up on your
CRT because of the Proportional Font being used. Copy them from here and Paste
them into your Word Processor with a Courier font and they will appear in columns.
Specifically, if you are using Windows 95 and Microsoft Word, do the
following:
1. In your E-Mail program, click in the body of the E-Mail and press CTRL+A
to
"Select All" of this text. (I'm a keyboard kind of guy:) :) )
2. Press CTRL+C to "Copy" this text to the Windows Clipboard.
3. Press Start and Load Microsoft Word.
4. Change the Font to Courier and the Font Size to 11.
5. Click in the body of the empty document and press CTRL+V to Paste this E-
Mail into Microsoft Word. Voila: the columns should line up.
6. To Print these results:
A. ALT-F for the File Menu
B. U for Page Setup
C. Take the Left and Right Margin to the lowest numbers allowable. For
instance, try 0 and 0. Word will come back and ask you if you want these to
be fixed - say Yes and it will give you the minimum margins for your printer.
D. CTRL+P to Print
Now that wasn't so hard was it?
All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR
Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if
you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what
each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
