Hi RAAM Fans ...
******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
On I8 in Arizona and on I10 in New Mexico, all riders must ride on the
shoulder even if it looks unrideable. Nick reports you may need to use your Mountain
Bike if necessary. If you do not ride on the shoulder, you will receive a
severe time penalty or be disqualified without warning. These states could
cancel RAAM if anyone is caught riding in the lane with traffic.
******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
In Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, the RAAM Headquarters Toll Free phone
number may not work. Here is a work around:
Dial 10-10-ATT-0
This will get you to an AT&T Operator who will dial the call at no charge to
you.

Hot Item -- Gerry Tatrai, The Wonder From Down Under (Australia), continues to
lead Seana Hogan in Second Place by about 1.5 Hours, at Time Station 10
(Safford, AZ), 611 miles into the race. Gerry has actually made it to Time
Station 11 in Lordsburg, New Mexico as of this report in First Place -- so
Gerry was the first to the New Mexico stateline!! As previously reported, the
Deputy Commander from the State of New Mexico was planning a surprise Fireworks show
for Gerry -- it will be fun to hear more about that!!
Hot Item -- Seana Hogan continues in 2nd place -- ahead of all of the other
men!! Seana is absolutely amazing!! She always rides with a large 56 Tooth
Chainring -- and was in it all the way from the start in Irvine to Yorba Park
and up most of the first climbs!!!
Hot Item -- Steve Born has moved into 3rd place!! It looks like Steve is
firing on all cylinders for sure and is riding an excellent RAAM this year. I road
the Heartbreak Double in June this year and Steve gave us all about a two hour
head start. He blew by me at Mile 170 like I was standing still and I was giving
it everything I had!! :) :) Go Steve!!
Hot Item -- Tom Buckley has dropped from 3rd place to 5th place -- probably
going down for a sleep break?
Hot Item -- There is a large group competing for 4th to 8th places all
separated by less than an hour at this point!! Mark Patten has advanced from 8th to 4th
place since the last update!!
Hot Item -- Let's talk about the Rookies.
Mark Patten is from Saratoga, California and is the lead Rookie at this point
in 4th place!!
Not far behind him is Harold Trease from Jemez Springs, New Mexico in 6th
place. I met Harold at the PAC Tour Training Camp in February. He's got the cutest
little boy -- and he's making his son mighty proud of him right now!!
Andreas Clavedetscher was a pro racer for 17 years. He was a Swiss Champion
twice and on the Swiss National Team for 10 years!! He currently lives in
Liechtenstein and is in 8th place.
Andrew Bohannon is from Sunnyvale, California and works at Cisco Systems
engineering high speed hardware which probably allows this E-Mail get from me
to you. Andrew is in 11th place.
Rick Anderson from Woodside, California is currently in 14th place and is
fortunate enough to have John Hughes, the main RAAM Cycling Wizard, and Lee
Mitchell, the main RAAM Crew Chief, both on his crew!! Rick is riding a great
race. On the side of Lee Mitchell's BIKE VAN, there was a drawing, possibly
done by one of Rick's kids, of Rick on his bike. It said, "Don't Get Too Hot"
-- I hope that Rick is following that tip.
Hansgeorg Haus from Permasens, Germany, is currently in 15th place.
Tim Kinkeade from Moscow, Idaho is currently in 16th place and has been a
frequent contributor to the Ultra Cycling E-Mail Forum over the past year --
Best of luck out there Tim!!
Charlie Liskey from Somis, California is in 17th place. I really liked what
Charlie wrote in his RAAM Bio: Why compete in such a grueling race? A quote
from Walden by Thoreau sums it up: "I went to the woods because I wished to
live deliberately, to confront only the essential facts of life and not to learn at
the end of my life that I had not lived."
Bernie Comeau from Ottawa, Canada is in 20th place. His nickname is "The Cow"
-- and now I remember seeing him in his white and black spotted cow jersey at
the start. In his RAAM Bio, Bernie said, "Recognizing that ultra-cycling only
gives the illusion of being a solo sport, he wishes to extend a heartfelt
apprecation to the 1998 crew of "Team Cow"." Well said, Bernie!!
Bob Kimber from Pagosa Springs, Colorado is in 21st place. Bob had planned to
ride with his wife Shonny on a tandem but she became ill in Irvine so Bob
switched plans and road his single bike!! Bob really smoked the first 84
miles to Time Station 1: He was in FIRST PLACE leading the entire field at that
point.
Tomas Celter is from Frydek-Mistek, a Czech Republic!! Tomas is in 22nd place
and as been reported, must have unfortunately ran into some problems in the
desert.
Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching continues to be
recovering from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 16th to 12th
Place. He is currently about 120 Miles behind the leaders.
Hot Item -- 1989 Winner Paul Solon started slow but his assault is on for sure
now!! He has moved up from 9th Place to 7th place. Notice that he is only 40
minutes behind Mark Patten in 4th Place!! The Heat is ON!!
Hot Item -- 1996 Winner Danny Chew has dropped from 7th place to 10th place.
On the ride out to Yorba Park, Danny mentioned that the first 100 Miles of RAAM
was going to be his 100th Century of the Year!! Pretty amazing -- never count
Danny out!!
Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team Secure Horizons has extended their lead
over Team 70+ to about 3 Hours. It is interesting to note that these Great
Old Guys are now starting to pass more and more of the Solo Riders -- even though
they're old, doesn't mean they're slow!! Of course, the Old Guys get a break
in the action as they have four guys on their teams.
Hot Item -- Mark Patten received a 15 minute time penalty at 3:30 am 7/25/98
due to jockeying for position so that a rider could not pass. There is a tight
race for 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th positions -- only 2 hours separate this group.
Hot Item -- Paul Solon received a 5 minute time penalty at 3:30 am 7/25/98 for
not displaying slow bicycle ahead triangle.
Hot Item -- Team Secure Horizons / SCOR received a 15 minute time penalty at
Time Station 8 due to a Headlight was not on bike.
Interesting Item -- As Hugh Murphy has reported, "Tatrai has an odd looking
pole that extends out in front of his pace van at roof height. It turned out to be
the world's largest water pistol squirting water on him as he rode." There is
quite a bit of discussion about this at Headquarters -- sounds like a MAJOR
BREAKTHROUGH IN SHOWER TECHNOLOGY to me!! Leave it to Gerry to break through
into new ground -- taking the Garden Sprayers to the NEXT GENERATION. The
Orange County Register has a great article on Page 16 of the Thursday 7/23/98
Sports Section showing Seana being sprayed down by a member of her Crew with
her Garden Sprayer with a number of enhancements to it. At the start, we noticed
that Gerry had "Air Conditioned Bicycle Shoes" -- where he cut the top of the
first half of his shoes off in order to help prevent Hot Foot. Gerry
continues to push the envelope as do so many of these RAAM Riders!! :) :) :)
Technical Note -- As you may have found, this report is difficult to print
well. I have corrected the column headings. These results may not line up on your
CRT because of the Proportional Font being used. Copy them from here and Paste
them into your Word Processor with a Courier font and they will appear in columns.
Specifically, if you are using Windows 95 and Microsoft Word, do the
following:
1. In your E-Mail program, click in the body of the E-Mail and press CTRL+A
to "Select All" of this text. (I'm a keyboard kind of guy:) :) )
2. Press CTRL+C to "Copy" this text to the Windows Clipboard.
3. Press Start and Load Microsoft Word.
4. Change the Font to Courier and the Font Size to 11.
5. Click in the body of the empty document and press CTRL+V to Paste this E-
Mail into Microsoft Word. Voila: the columns should line up.
6. To Print these results:
A. ALT-F for the File Menu
B. U for Page Setup
C. Take the Left and Right Margin to the lowest numbers allowable. For
instance, try 0 and 0. Word will come back and ask you if you want these to
be fixed - say Yes and it will give you the minimum margins for your printer.
D. CTRL+P to Print
Now that wasn't so hard was it?
All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR
Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if you
don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what
each rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
