Hi RAAM Fans ...

******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
On I8 in Arizona and on I10 in New Mexico, all riders must ride on the
shoulder even if it looks unrideable. Nick reports you may need to use your Mountain
Bike if necessary. If you do not ride on the shoulder, you will receive a
severe time penalty or be disqualified without warning. These states could
cancel RAAM if anyone is caught riding in the lane with traffic.

******
Note to crews from Headquarters:
In Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, the RAAM Headquarters Toll Free phone
number may not work. Here is a work around:
Dial 10-10-ATT-0
This will get you to an AT&T Operator who will dial the call at no charge to
you.

Hot Item -- With this update, Headquarters has merged Seana in with the Men
for one Solo Divison Report. I'm sure Seana would approve of that!! Overall
position numbers have been corrected -- for the Solo Men and Women, the
Overall position is one series of numbers and for the Teams that started Thursday, the
Overall position is another series of numbers starting with 1.

Hot Item -- Gerry Tatrai, The Wonder From Down Under (Australia), has extended
his lead over Seana Hogan in Second Place to 1 Hour and 40 Minutes lead, at
Time Station 9 (Cutter, AZ), 557 miles into the race.

Hot Item -- Tom Buckley continues in 3rd place with no change in 4th to 7th
place.

Hot Item -- Last Year's Men's Champion Wolfgang Fasching appears to be
recovering from his earlier problems as he has moved up from 21st Place to
16th. He is currently about 160 Miles behind the leaders.

Hot Item -- Paul Solon started slow but has moved up from 12th Place to a tie
for 9th place. He may be continuing his assault for what appears to target
the leaders at the Mississippi River?

Hot Item -- Tomas Celta, the first Czech rider to race in RAAM, is definitely
running into problems as he is only through Time Station 1 so he is at least
473 miles behind the leaders. He has probably dropped from the Race but it may be
that he doesn't understand that he needs to call Headquarters and report.

Hot Item -- In the 70+ Division, Team Secure Horizons continues to lead Team
70+ by about 2 Hours.

Hot Item -- I checked each Rider's Individual Rider Statistics and did not
find any new Time Penalties or Rider Notes.

Interesting Item -- Hugh Murphy reports from Headquarters that the Deputy
Commander of New Mexico called in. He has been seeing the RAAM Coverage on
NBC News as well as ABC's Good Morning America -- thanks to Michael, Nick, and
the expanded RAAM Coverage this year. The Deputy Commander and his boss are
Bicycle Riders big time -- well, maybe not quite as much as the RAAM Riders
that are about to ride across his state!! Anyway, the Deputy Commander is at
the border waiting for Gerry Tatrai and planning a Fireworks show for "The
Wonder from Down Under" when he gets to the border of New Mexico!! This is in
honor of RAAM coming through New Mexico and the Deputy Commander plans to
personally going to greet every rider. Of course, if Gerry isn't careful, the
fireworks will be for Seana who is HOT on his tail!!

Interesting Item -- As Hugh Murphy has reported, "Tatrai has an odd looking
pole that extends out in front of his pace van at roof height. It turned out to be
the world's largest water pistol squirting water on him as he rode." There is
quite a bit of discussion about this at Headquarters -- sounds like a MAJOR
BREAKTHROUGH IN SHOWER TECHNOLOGY to me!! Leave it to Gerry to break through
into new ground -- taking the Garden Sprayers to the NEXT GENERATION. The
Orange County Register has a great article on Page 16 of the Thursday 7/23/98
Sports Section showing Seana being sprayed down by a member of her Crew with
her Garden Sprayer with a number of enhancements to it. At the start, we
noticed that Gerry had "Air Conditioned Bicycle Shoes" -- where he cut the top
of the first half of his shoes off in order to help prevent Hot Foot. Gerry
continues to push the envelope as do so many of these RAAM Riders!! :) :) :)

All credit for this work should go to RAAM Headquarters manned by the SCOR
Club and headed by Larry Mahrenholtz. The Web Site is totally awesome and if
you don't have Internet Access, you need to get it in order to really see what
each
rider is doing through each time station, etc. Check out:
