"Today I want you to remember something!” demands the voice,
which belongs to Ken Chlouber, founder of the Leadville Trail 100,
arguably the most arduous single day mountain bike event going.

“When you’re suffering up that mountain, I want you to dig deep!
You’re better than you think you are!
And you can do more than you think you can!”

You can find the latest detailed version of the Ride Calendar at any time by going to www.CalTripleCrown.org and selecting the CTC Ride Calendar which takes you to

http://www.caltriplecrown.org/CTC_Calendar_aspx

and shows you the detailed version of the calendar complete with Registration Open Date, Early Bird Discount Date, Late Fee Date, Registration Close Date, Volunteer Ride Date, and a link to easily Volunteer for each of the Doubles.

We are considering various options for the location and date of the California Triple Crown Awards Breakfast. We will send out a survey in a couple of weeks to everyone on the California Triple Crown e-mail list here. We'll then review the results of the survey to see what most people want, make a decision, and announce it. The Awards Breakfast may or may not be held the day after the Knoxville Fall Classic Double as it has been in the past. We are so appreciative of Scott Halversen and the Quackcyclists for hosting us every year since 2001!!

We do our best to not have any Double Centuries in the series on the same day.  We are fully aware that date conflicts are not good for either event reducing the number of riders and the number of volunteers available for both events.

Each of the California Triple Crown Double Centuries is a Major Adventure in itself!!

A BIG Thanks to the Ride Organizers of each of these Double Centuries.  Please thank them for the many hours they work to organize these incredibly complicated events.

Over the years, we have spoken to many cyclists who picked a difficult Double Century as their first.  In many cases, they weren't able to complete it because of mechanical, biomechanical, or mental challenges.  We are convinced that these cyclists could have completed one of the flatter Doubles with a great sense of accomplishment.  They could have found that riding Doubles is challenging but also fun!!

Not a single one of these rides is easy.  Each will provide you with a "Personal Growth Experience".  Don't make the mistake of moving into the tougher Doubles until you're ready - mechanically, biomechanically, and mentally!!  Once you're well prepared, the California Triple Crown Double Century series has plenty of challenges for you.

When you have successfully complete three of the above Doubles, you are a Triple Crown Winner.  You have earned the right to buy lots of cool products as shown at

http://www.caltriplecrown.com/products.htm

Bicycling publications and club newsletter editors receive your name for print.  Your name is included on the California Triple Crown web sites at

http://www.CalTripleCrown.com

and

http://www.CalTripleCrown.org

You become part of a group of select Bicyclists and have the tremendous satisfaction of completing one of the most difficult Bicycling events anywhere!!

The California Triple Crown is a small, completely volunteer organization established to publish the schedule and the results of these rides.

In order to receive California Triple Crown Credit for completing one of these Double Centuries, you must be on the Official Finisher's list for the 200 Miles as published by the Ride Organizer.

Please be sure that the exact spelling of your First and Last Name is the same when you register for the California Triple Crown and when you register for each of the Double Centuries because we post the results of the Double Centuries to the California Triple Crown records based on your First and Last Name.

Hugh Murphy, the organizer of the Southern Inyo and Southern Inyo by Moonlight Doubles, wrote: "For 2019, the Southern Inyo Double has a new venue. Ridgecrest is one hour closer to Southern California and those coming from Northern California by way of Bakersfield. The new venue has allowed us to create new courses and challenges, with Lowland, Highland, and Double-Double options. The scenic beauty and silky smooth roads of Southern Inyo and Eastern Kern Counties is unparalleled.... Lets Ride!

New for 2019, elite California Triple Crown Double Century riders will be encouraged to go beyond the 200 miles to riding 400 miles in one weekend. The Southern Inyo Double-Double has been added to the California Triple Crown schedule for 2019. It is being ran in conjunction with the Southern Inyo Double Century. The two California Triple Crown Doubles must be completed in one weekend. If the first Double is on one Saturday, the second Double can’t be ridden on the next Saturday a week later. The challenge is to ride 400 miles in one weekend. Riders who complete the Southern Inyo Double-Double will receive California Triple Crown credit for completing Two Double Centuries.

More information can be found at www.InyoUltra.com   When you register, use promo code CTC to get a 20% discount for all Southern Inyo options including Southern Inyo by Moonlight."

The California Triple Crown records one ride credit and/or one volunteer credit to each event based on the results posted by the Ride Organizers.

If you want these rides to continue, please bring your friends and families along and ask the ride organizer how they can help make the ride a success!!

If you want these rides to improve, volunteer and do your part to make them better!!

Those who say it can't be done are usually interrupted by others doing it!!

Accept The Challenge: Be A California Triple Crown Winner!!

Rob Hawks wrote "I am so saddened to pass along to you that one of our membership has passed. Bruce Berg, RUSA # 1349, passed away at home on Saturday, December 24, 2018, surrounded by his family."

He loved these hard rides and he tackled the most challenging of them all as shown in his California Triple Crown History Report HERE showing that he completed 66 California Triple Crown Double Centuries and Volunteered at 6 of them.

The California Triple Crown family lost a really good friend and a true legend of the sport with the passing of John M. Clare in a tragic accident on Saturday, January 26, 2019.

John was inducted into the California Triple Crown Hall of Fame in 2012 in recognition of him completing 50 Double Centuries in the California Triple Crown Series

Just 4 years later in 2016, he was inducted into the California Triple Crown 100 Double Century Club of the Hall of Fame in recognition of him completing 100 Double Centuries in the California Triple Crown Series. He loved these hard rides and he tackled the most challenging of them all as shown in his California Triple Crown History Report HERE showing that he completed 125 California Triple Crown Double Centuries!!

John and his wife, Melinda, are some of the most generous people to ever help the sport of Long Distance Cycling. John volunteered on at least 34 Double Centuries. He believed we should all give back at least 10% of the time. He also actively promoted all of the Doubles and recruited many new riders. He found that mentoring and encouraging others is important to sustain the Doubles for years to come. Melinda volunteered on at least 26 Double Centuries.

Please visit John's Memorial Page where you can learn more about this great man, write a memory you have of him, a story, or to say goodbye to a good friend.

John's wife, Melinda, wrote: "The celebration of life for John will be Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 6pm. Location is Cerritos Park East, 13234 E. 166th St., Cerritos, CA 90703. There will be an "open mic" if you would like to share your memories of John. Immediately following the celebration, dinner will be served. We hope you will stay, eat, and visit with family and friends."

Ellen Kirk suggested that we add John's name to the CTC Jerseys. What a great idea!! We'll make that happen with the CTC Jerseys we order this year so we will honor John's memory.

Chuck wrote: "Personally, I'm in shock. John was bigger than life and it will take a long time for me to wrap my mind around this tragedy.

But I do know that:

"When someone dies, you don't 'get over it' by forgetting.
You 'get over it' by remembering."
